6 Inappropriate Back-To-School Store Displays

Summary: Wal-Mart has condemned a store that displayed guns as a back-to-school item.

It’s August, which means kids are heading back to school. They’ll need the usual items–pens, paper, backpacks, and… guns?

Wal-Mart recently apologized after a picture went viral of a store display touting rifles as a back to school must have.  On Wednesday, the retailer told CNN Money that they were conducting an internal investigation to determine where the store was located.

The photo showed a glass display filled with guns, and there was a sign above it that said, “Own the school year like a hero.” It was uploaded by user @thisismesara.

The photo prompted backlash, and Wal-Mart condemned the display, calling it “horrible.” A company spokesman told CNN Money that the company is “working diligently” to find out where the photo was taken and to remove the sign.

“What’s seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores. We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened,” Wal-Mart said.

While this snafu was most likely a mistake from a careless clerk, Wal-Mart can take solace knowing that they aren’t the only store to make a stupid and inappropriate back-to-school display.

The following are five other back-to-school displays that left school-bound consumers scratching them heads.

TEEN MOM IN SCHOOL

MTV’s hit reality show Teen Mom showed what life is like for young mothers, and while teen pregnancy is a problem that has never gone away, stores don’t necessarily need to cater to that demographic when it’s time for back-to-school.

FUTURE TEEN MOM

When it comes to wanting to know if you’re a pregnant or not, you probably don’t care if you’re getting a back-to-school special.

FOR SCHOOLS WITH LAX DRESS CODES

Dress codes have been in the news for allegedly being too strict on young women. But for one store, they possibly imagine a world where schools aren’t strict enough.

IF THIS IS FOR CULINARY SCHOOL, THEN OKAY…

In a first grader’s arsenal, who knew that you’d need crayons, rulers, and possibly a six-inch blade to do some major vegetable damage.

THIS DISPLAY IS PROBABLY FOR THE TEACHERS MORE THAN ANYTHING

Anyone who has ever dealt with a roomful of snotty kids knows this display really isn’t as ridiculous as it seems at first.
