Summary: A security guard is suing Irish fighter Conor McGregor for hitting him with a soda can.
Conor McGregor is a very rich man. In August, he fought Floyd Mayweather in a pay-per-view event that reportedly earned hundreds of millions of dollars; and The Telegraph reported that the Irish fighter walked away with at least $30 million. Now, McGregor is bracing himself for a new battle–a legal one!
During the UFC 202 fight week press conference almost one year ago, McGregor and his opponent Nate Diaz got into a wild confrontation that resulted in energy drink cans and water bottles being thrown about like a middle school food fight. The viral moment helped hype their record-breaking fight, but it is also landing McGregor in trouble now.
According to The Sun UK, a security guard standing nearby was hit by a soda can allegedly in the back of his head. The guard, William Pegg, said that he was injured and is now seeking damages of almost $95,000.
Pegg came up with the amount after doing a questionable math formula. The Irishman reportedly earned $14.5 million from his fight with Diaz, and according to Pegg’s lawsuit, McGregor was struck “significantly” up to 166 times. Pegg divided up McGregor’s earnings by the amount of times that he was hit, and he decided that he should be entitled to that amount plus the cost of his medical injuries, which was about $5,000.
ESPN obtained court records that showed Pegg filed a lawsuit in March against McGregor and McGregor Sports and Entertainment. McGregor attempted to dismiss the case in May but was denied. His legal team denies all responsibility for Pegg’s injuries.
This is not the only lawsuit that McGregor is also fighting. Earlier this year, a rental car company threatened to sue McGregor after he posted a photo of himself standing on a Rolls Royce. He said in his caption: “Liverpool we run your entire city,” and the rental company who had provided the vehicle didn’t appreciate McGregor’s treatment of it or the implication that he owned the expensive car.
“He stood on the car acting like it is his own. It is not his own,” Platinum Executive Travel told Liverpool Echo.Â
McGregor is the UFC’s lightweight champion, and he made his professional boxing debut against Mayweather last month. Regarding the UFC 202 press conference fight, McGregor was fined $25,000 and ordered to complete 25 hours of community service.
McGregor is expected to return to the UFC in 2018, according to MMA Junkie, and there is a high possibility he will rematch with Nate Diaz.
The Irish fighter is currently relaxing on the island of Ibiza with his girlfriend and family. He has joked with The Sun that since his famous fight with Mayweather he has been gorging himself and gaining weight. In a photo he posted after eating a large meal, he wrote the caption: “You need to get yourself a wealth belly, kid. It’s the new six pack.”
