Summary: The Drexel professor who has taken to Twitter on several occasions to point fingers at white people has done it again.
According to the controversial Drexel University professor who tweeted last Christmas Eve that he wanted a “white genocide,” the Texas Church massacre was a result of “whiteness.” The liberal professor George Ciccariello-Maher was booted from the university after making remarks about the Las Vegas shooting that were not appropriate.
Now Ciccariello-Maher says white “entitlement” was the motivating factor to the recent mass shootings. In an interview with Democracy Now!, he said, “Whiteness is never seen as a cause, in and of itself, of these kinds of massacres despite the fact that whiteness is a structure of privilege and it’s a structure of power, and a structure that, when it feels threatened, you know, lashes out.”
Under Ciccariello-Maher’s theory, Texas shooter Devin Kelley killed 26 people at the church because of his “whiteness.” Ciccariello-Maher promoted his interview on Twitter to discuss “white masculinity, militarism, and terror after Sutherland Springs.” He wants people to be asking themselves “What makes white men so prone to this kind of behavior?”
Ciccariello-Maher admits he does not know all that happened in the Texas shooting but that “entitlement” and an “institutional apparatus that trains people in violence” and makes people feel “they’re on the losing side of history” can make them “resort to violence.” He agrees that mass killers have “clear mental issues” but “the cause needs to be identified outside and beyond that…”
Ciccariello-Maher is critical of the far right and their treatment of Muslims but are not willing to “talk about the real deep structures of white supremacy in our society…not just the fringe, not just the Nazi movements, but what people are going through every day and what it is that is driving people to these kinds of situations, where they feel so entitled to dominance, that when that’s questioned, they can explode in these very, very unpredictable ways.”
He then turned his concentration to Trump. He said, “Trump makes hay out of the fact that white men, in particular, feel as though they’re the victims of society, despite being in absolute control of it and this is something that is powerfully dangerous, and it’s why we’re not seeing only the rise in violent attacks, more generally, and the rise of far-right movements, but we’re certainly seeing, you know, clearly, sort of some very serious incidents of mass violence, as well.”
Ciccariello-Maher’s one comment after the shooting in Las Vegas was to tweet “A White Man.” When Fox News asked for a comment from Ciccariello-Maher, he responded, “I don’t talk to mercenaries.”
Ciccariello-Maher only teaches classes online now.
