Summary: A slightly tamer year than 2016 when it comes to celebrity breakups but there were still a number of jaw-droppers.
While this year seemed to be filled with amicable splits of lengthy marriages, the length of the marriages ranged from years to months. Learn all about the biggest breakups of the year below:
1. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris – Perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the year for fans around the globe, the couple announced their split after 8 years of marriage and one son together. Faris and Pratt met in 2007 on the set of Take Me Home Tonight. In similar statements, they said, “Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating. We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake, we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. We still have for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.”
2. Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor – After 17 years of marriage, Stiller and Taylor announced their separation. They have two children together. In a joint statement to Entertainment Tonight, they said, “With tremendous love and respect for each other, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple, we have made the decision to separate. Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends.”
3. Scarlett Johannson and Romain Dauriac – The former couple was together for just over four years, two of which were married. The couple never announced their split publicly and reportedly split in 2016 but was only learned about this year. They have a daughter together. Since their split has become more public, the once united parents are now fighting for custody of their two-year-old.
4. Fergie and Josh Duhamel – The couple was married for 13 years plus eight years of dating. They have one son together. The two stated to People magazine: “With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year. To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support for each other and our family.”
5. Theresa and Larry Caputo – “Long Island Medium” star Theresa is splitting from her husband of 28 years. In a statement just over a week ago to Us Weekly the pair stated, “After 28 years of marriage, we have decided to legally separate. We will always love each other and our two wonderful children. We are united in supporting each other and our family.” In a recent episode, Theresa told a friend that they had grown apart and both changed so that they were no longer happy with the marriage.
6. Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna – Although they never made it down the aisle, Kardashian had proposed to Chyna after only dating for 10 weeks. They hit some bumpy patches after their daughter was born last November. They broke up for good in February with things turning nasty. Chyna even filed for a restraining order against Kardashian. It appears things have toned down and the former couple is playing nice for now.
7. Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga – The couple spent nine years engaged before calling things off. The American Idol alum had even filed for a protective order from her former pro wrestler fiancé. Her rep said, “They have been in the process of ending their relationship for a number of months. Today, Jennifer requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé. Jennifer’s actions are solely taken in the best interest of their son.” However, it was reported that he won primary custody of their 8-year-old son so she dropped the order so they could work out an arrangement together.
8. Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana – After five year of marriage and just months after the birth of their first child, the couple announced their divorce. In a video the 51-year-old pop star released to her fans, Jackson says, “I just want to keep it real with you guys for a second: Yes, I separated from my husband. We are in court and the rest is in God’s hands.”
9. David Schwimmer and Zoe Buckman – The pair was together for seven years before announcing their split in a statement to US Weekly in April. They stated, “It is with great love, respect and friendship that we have decided to take some time apart while we determine the future of our relationship. Our priority is, of course, our daughter’s happiness and well being during this challenging time, and so we ask for your support and respect for our privacy as we continue to raise her together and navigate this new chapter for our family.”
10. Tamar Braxton and Vincent Herbert – The couple was married for over ten years. Herbert was also her manager. They have one son together. They reportedly started dating in 2003 and married in 2008.
11. Laurence Fishburne and Gina Torres – The actors were married in 2002 and have one daughter together. They actually split last year quietly. They went public in September when Torres was seen kissing another man. They finalized their divorce in November. Torres said in a statement to PEOPLE, “With heavy hearts, Laurence and I quietly separated and began the dissolution of our marriage in the early fall of last year. There are no bad guys here. Only a love story with a different ending than either one of us had expected.”
12. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sara Kapfer – The couple called it quits after over 20 years of marriage. They announced their separation three years ago but no one took the finalizing step of filing for divorce until this year when Gooding taking the leap. He is requesting joint custody of their son and agrees to pay spousal support but is not willing to give her any of his earnings post-separation. The couple met and fell in love in high school.
13. Mel B and Stephen Belafonte – The former Spice Girl filed for divorce after ten years of marriage to Belafonte.
14. Jesse Williams and Aaryn Blake – The Grey’s Anatomy star left his wife after five years of marriage. They first dated in 2008 and married in 2012. They have two children together. The split is allegedly “amicable.”
15. Harvey Weinstein and Georgia Chapman – In a not so surprising announcement, Chapman announced her split from her movie producer husband after ten years of marriage. Weinstein has been accused of rape and sexual harassment from numerous women. In a statement to PEOPLE, she said, “My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.” The couple has two young kids together.
