Summary: We often turn to spending money when we want to get in a better mood, such as going to the movies or eating. Instead, try one of these free ways to perk you up.

When it comes to feeling better, we often turn to certain habits to make ourselves feel better, such as shopping, eating, getting a pedicure, facial, etc. For many people, however, these things end up costing us more money than we’re really able or would like to spend. But what else can you do to feel better when you’ve had a rough week? There are plenty of things that are completely free, you just have to break your old habits and try something new. Some items are things that you can do for an afternoon, while others give you a quick boost to get you through a tough morning. Here are eight tricks to improving your mood without emptying your wallet.

  1. Drink a glass of water. This one may seem too simple, but oftentimes our brains feel foggy because we’re dehydrated. A tall glass of cold water will jolt your system as well as rehydrate your brain to help you focus.
  2. Do a 1 to 5 minute power workout. Another way to give yourself a boost of energy is to get your blood pumping. Get up and do a short circuit involving moves like jumping jacks, pushups, squats, stretches and high knees. The physical movement along with a small burst of adrenaline will improve your mood and energy level quickly.
  3. Take a long, relaxing shower. Get up a little earlier or get in the shower after a long day and really take your time. Let the steam fill up your bathroom, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Not only will the hot water ease your muscles and any tension you’re holding, it will feel luxurious without costing much.
  4. Do a short meditation. Many people don’t realize that meditation isn’t necessarily clearing your head of all thoughts. Simply sit still, close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly. If thoughts keep popping up, acknowledge them and let them move on. Try a short guided meditation to help get you started.
  5. Play a favorite playlist. Music is incredibly emotional and can trigger a lot of memories. Create a playlist that reminds you of good times or include songs that make you happy and want to dance. Pull it out when you’re not in a good mood and you’ll start to feel better after just a few minutes.
  6. Compliment someone else. We all love when we get a compliment, but actually giving them to other people makes you feel good as well. When we help other people feel better, it triggers our own happiness responses because we feel like we’ve done something good.
  7. Head outside. It’s no secret that spending time in the sunshine and fresh air can do wonders for our mood. Even if you’re at work, use your lunch break to get out of the office and walk around the block. That short amount of time outside can give you a real boost.
  8. Act like a kid. Nothing makes you feel better than a few completely carefree moments. Head to a park with a friend, leave your cell phone behind, and play on the swings or pick up a game of basketball. Move in a way that’s purely for fun and leave the electronics behind.
