Summary: A 16-year-old shooter killed at least two of his classmates on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday morning, a shooter entered a high school in western Kentucky and killed two students and injured at least 19 at the time of reporting. The suspect, a teen male has been arrested, according to CNN.
One the victims of the attack was Daniel Austin, 17 and special needs. His mother told CNN that she and Daniel’s father had called the boy multiple times before finding out he was wounded.
“Teachers love him. Students love him. I don’t think anything can say one bad thing about him,” Andrea Austin said. “And that’s not because I’m his mom. Everybody loves him.”
Another student told the Associated Press that the shots occurred before classes, when students were gathered in a common area.
“I blacked out. I couldn’t move. I got up and I tried to run, but I fell. I heard someone hit the ground. It was so close to me,” Lexie Waymon, 16, said. “I just heard it and then I just, everything was black for a good minute. Like, I could not see anything. I just froze and did not know what to do. Then I got up and I ran.”
The shooting occurred at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky, and CBS News said that one 15-year-old male and one 15-year-old female were killed. The shooter, who is either 15 or 16, had entered the school at 7:57 am and opened fire with a handgun, Kentucky State Police Commissioner Richard Sanders said at a press conference.
Sanders said that police will investigate the shooter’s background to determine a motive. He said that the shooter will be charged with murder and attempted murder.
After the shooting, witnesses told CBS News that there was chaos at the high school as families attempted to retrieve their kids.
“All the parking lots were full with parents and kids hugging each other and crying and nobody really knowing what was going on,” witness Dusty Kornbacher, who owns a nearby floral shop, said.
Governor Matt Bevin left Kentucky’s capital to arrive at the scene and show his support.
“This is a wound that is going to take a long time to heal. For some in this community will never fully heal,” Bevin said told Fox News.
Marshall County is about 30 miles away from Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky. In 1997, there was a mass shooting at Heath High School committed by a 14-year-old. According to the Associated Press, Tuesday’s shooting is the first mass shooting of 2018.
