Rosenstein was confirmed last April into the position as the No. 2 official at the U.S. Department of Justice. Since then he has been a big part of the scandal involving the investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election.

The drama around the presidency involves claims that a memo he wrote was the reason President Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey. Rosenstein was also the one to appoint Robert Mueller as the special counsel for the investigation into any connections between the Trump campaign and Russia.

The most recent drama is from a declassified memo that was released last week by the Republicans. In the memo, Rosenstein is referenced as one of the senior justice officials who desired surveillance warrants on Carter Page, a former Trump adviser. Some believe the memo demonstrates a bias against Trump by the FBI and Justice Department.

Rosenstein earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He clerked for Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. From there he went on to join the U.S. Department of Justice where he prosecuted public corruption cases. He has also served as Maryland’s Assistant U.S. Attorney and U.S. Attorney.
