Professor David W. Kennedy is serving as director for Harvard’s Institute for Global Law and Policy, and he said that bringing the two institutes together will help leaders by providing them a quality legal education.

“They [TIJ] offer their own programs and workshops for emerging leaders from the region and we [IGLP] provide them with some of the curriculum and offer them some of our faculty to help them implement their workshops,” Kennedy told The Crimson. “It’s a two-way street.”

Dr. Kittipong Kittyarak, TIJ executive director told The Bangkok Post, that his organization was proud to work with Harvard Law because of the school’s world-renown reputation.

“Harvard Law School is one of the world’s leading law schools with a comprehensive network of faculties, experts, and scholars in global law and policymaking who can relate to TIJ’s core mission. Therefore, it was a very good opportunity to work together to promote the rule of law among the public,” Kittyarak said.

Kittyarak said that the TIJ-IGLP Workshop for Emerging Leaders would focus on law and its role on sustainable development. He said that this year 120 scholars and students from 51 countries were chosen to participate in the workshops.

“The objective of the TIJ-IGLP workshops is to cultivate an appreciation of the importance of the rule of law, particularly its vital role in the achievement of sustainable development. The workshops provide a platform that encourages constructive discussion among practitioners and promotes learning through experience-sharing. With deeper understanding about the rule of law an essential catalyst for sustainable development, participants become part of an ever-growing network of emerging leaders who act as agents of change in their respective fields, and bridge thinking into practice,” Kittyarak told the Bangkok Post.

Last month, the partnership had three sessions called “TIJ Workshop for Emerging Leaders on the Rule of Law and Policy,” “IGLP Workshop for Scholars,” and “Student Workshop for Next-Gen Global Leaders.” The Bangkok workshops covered topics such as social governance, and it featured speakers from around the world.

“We need new ideas and ideas matter for global governance,” Kennedy told The Crimson. “We can’t think of them all on our own here, so what we need to do is engage people around the world who are thinking in new ways.”

The Thailand Institute of Justice was established by the Royal Thai government in 2011. They promote the rule of law through research on criminal justice and preventing crime.

Harvard’s Institute for Global Law and Policy was founded in 2009, and its mission is to develop new approaches to international law and foster global academic discussions, according to The Crimson.
