Police stated that the murdered were not students at the school, and it appeared that the slaying was a “family-type domestic issue.” The crime occurred at Campbell Hall at Central Michigan University around 8:30 a.m.

Police said that the suspect wore yellow-colored jeans and a blue hoodie. They said he was approximately 5 foot 9 inches.

Authorities identified the shooter as James Eric Davis, Jr., 19. On Thursday, Davis had been in the local hospital for drug-related treatment, but the police would not elaborate further.

Friday’s shooting comes almost two weeks after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida. On February 14, Nikolas Cruz, an expelled student, entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an automatic rifle, pulled the fire alarm, and then shot and killed 17 students and staff as they exited their rooms.

The Parkland tragedy sparked a heated national gun debate between victims of the shooting and pro-gun activists. The victims of the shooting criticized the National Rifle Association and politicians who accepted money from them for not doing anything to stop school shootings, and pro-gun activists have remained adamant that gun restrictions do not work.

Additionally, law enforcement agencies involved in the Parkland incident faced public scrutiny after it was discovered that the shooter had dozens of complaints placed against him with the FBI and the Broward County Sheriff’s office.

In the Michigan shooting situation, Davis did not have a criminal record, according to local police.

Michigan Governor Rick Synder tweeted that the local police were investigating the matter.

“The priority right now is the safety of those still on campus and I thank all first responders involved for their swift action,” Synder said.

Since the Parkland shooting, major gun retailers, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart, have said they will not sell guns to buyers under 21, despite local gun laws. Currently, some states allow guns to be legally purchased by people who are 18 or older.

According to NPR, the number of Americans who want stricter gun control laws have increased after the Parkland shooting. About 75% of those polled in a new NPR poll said that gun laws should be stricter than they are today.

Those who are against stricter gun restrictions have advocated arming school staff and teachers, and this is a position that President Donald Trump has also taken.

“….History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes police & first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!” Trump tweeted.
