Summary: Dr. Larry Nassar’s former boss at Michigan State University was arrested on Tuesday.
The boss of accused pedophile Dr. Larry Nassar was arrested on Tuesday. According to USA Today, the former dean of Michigan State University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine had a warrant issued on charges of felony misconduct in office, fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, and two additional misdemeanors.
William Derkey Strampel, 70, oversaw Nassar’s clinic at MSU during the period of time Nassar had allegedly molested young female athletes he was tasked to care for. This year, Nassar was sentenced to prison for that abuse, and the Michigan Attorney General opened an investigation into the school as to how it allowed Nassar to get away with his misconduct for so long. During their probe, they discovered the allegations against Strampel.
According to the affidavit presented in court, Strampel had allegedly groped two female medical students, kept pornographic images on his computer, and made gross sexual comments to students.
The former dean is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon. His misconduct charges carry a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison, his willful neglect of duty carries a one-year maximum, and his sexual assault charge carries a maximum two-year sentence.
The Michigan Attorney General began their probe into Michigan State during Nassar’s sentencing hearings earlier this year, and during their first request for documents, the misconduct allegations against Strampel surfaced. The investigation was led by special prosecutor William Forsyth.
During the investigation, law enforcement conducted a forensic examination of Strampel’s work computer and found 50 images of porn as well as nude selfies from MSU students. It appeared he had tried to delete those photos.
The computer also had a video of Nassar abusing a student.
“Also uncovered on Strampel’s work computer were pornographic videos and a video of Dr. Larry Nassar performing ‘treatment’ on a young female patient,” the affidavit said.
On February 5, Nassar was sentenced to 125 years in prison because of his decades of sexual abuse. He was previously convicted in 2017 of possessing child pornography.
Strampel is currently being held at Ingham County Jail in Michigan. He stepped down as dean in December for medical reasons, but he remains on the faculty, according to USA Today.
In February, Michigan State University President John Engler began the process of revoking Strampel’s tenure.
In January, the Lansing State Journal reported that Nassar and Strampel’s misconduct could open MSU to civil lawsuits from victims who suffered from the sexual misconduct.
