Summary: The things that go into making an actor successful are very much the same kinds of things that go into making an attorney successful.
Attorneys are a unique type, with attitudes and behaviors unlike most working professionals. Harrison Barnes explains why attorneys act the way they do in “Why the Best Actors and Attorneys Are Exactly Alike.” Attorneys must act the way they do if they wish to rise above their colleagues and be at the top of their game, much like actors. Barnes’ exposure to famous actors has allowed him to observe and take note of many of the same characteristics he sees in the best attorneys. Actors have a combination of talents that allow them to rise to the top and stand out from the rest, which happen to be many of the same talents the best attorneys have.
Being an attorney is hard work, much like being an actor is. It is evident when an actor is not passionate about the art of acting. Their drive to succeed is for the wrong reasons which then translates into their attitude. They don’t care about the projects; they only care about the money. An attorney that has the same outlook and does not care about their work will struggle to keep up without a real drive pushing them forward.
Attorneys need to have their heart in the law first before getting concerned about the kind of money they might earn. They go to good schools, get good grades and may even get a job in a good law firm but if they don’t enjoy what they are doing and think their credentials will carry them through, they will fail. They eventually tire of putting long hours and lose motivation. They develop an attitude of entitlement because of their law school and grades and think those merits alone will help them keep their job. They also treat those who they feel are beneath them with disrespect, burning bridges and ruining valuable connections.
The best attorneys dive into their profession, trying to learn all they can about how to be better at what they do. They will immerse themselves in the industry by attending seminars, reading up on their practice area, and discussing the law with others. These kinds of attorneys are willing to work for less if the situation brings them closer to where they want to be in their career.
An actor’s looks may help them land a big role but it does not guarantee continued work unless they have other talents to back them up. While being well-groomed and healthy definitely plays a role for both actors and attorneys, it is not the single most important factor.
The way an attorney treats others will turn out to be a bigger factor than their looks. An attorney who treats others with respect and kindness will be noticed and rewarded. Those around them will notice their positivity and genuine attitude towards others and want to help them because they like them. Attorneys that use others and constantly rattle cages will not be well-liked. An attorney that is not liked will not get far because no one will want to work with them or help them. Let’s face it, everyone needs help at some point or another.
