Woman Charged for Killing Broadway Star’s Child on Brooklyn Street

A New York woman who allegedly mowed down five people with her car, including the daughter of a Broadway star, was charged with manslaughter on Thursday.

A Brooklyn grand jury indicted Dorothy Bruns with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of criminally negligent homicide, two counts of reckless endangerment, and three counts of assault, according to Buzzfeed. She was also charged with reckless driving and a red light violation.

On March 5, Burns, 44 and from Staten Island, allegedly drove through a red light in Brooklyn after having a seizure. After her car struck five people, it continued moving and dragged a stroller with a young boy down the street, killing the child.

Burns allegedly killed two small children, including Abigail Blumenstein, the four-year-old daughter of Ruthie Ann Miles, a Broadway star who had won a Tony award. Miles and her friend were walking down the street with their children, and Burns allegedly killed Miles’ friend’s son, Joshua Lew, who was one-year-old.

“The vehicle continued forward and struck a parked and unoccupied car before coming to a stop,” the NYPD stated.

Andrew Macaluso, 26, witnessed the crash and told The New York Post that Miles and Lew immediately rushed to their children.

“The mom was sitting there next to him screaming,’’ Macaluso said. “She was just kind of, ‘Oh, God, this can’t be happening! Tell me this isn’t happening! What’s going on?’”

The crash was caught on surveillance footage, and police talked to Burns at the scene. According to The Post, she told the cops that she did not remember hitting anyone.

“Dorothy Bruns, 44, told cops she was trying to avoid hitting a car and swerved out of the way. She remembers waking up behind the wheel but was unaware that she had hit anyone. Police sources said Bruns would not be held and was free to go, at least for now,” The Post wrote in March.

Miles is an actress on “The Americans,” and she had won a Tony in 2015 for the reprisal of the hit show The King and I. She was also hit by the vehicle in March, and although she was pregnant, her unborn child was unharmed, according to People.

Miles’ friend, Lauren Lew, was also hit by the car, and she was hospitalized immediately.

Additionally, an unnamed male pedestrian was injured in the crash.

In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the driver of the vehicle should never have been allowed to drive.

“This should never have happened,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “She should have never been allowed to be driving a car after what we know. If you looked at her traffic history, running red lights, speeding near schools, over a dozen moving violations that she had. I do not know why she was let go.”

After the accident, friends raised money for Miles and Lew. Through Go Fund Me, Miles raised $400,000 and Lew raised $200,000.
