Summary: The Black graduates of UVA Law 2018 put together a music video to celebrate their accomplishments in the face of hostility.
Charlottesville, Virginia has had quite the year. Around nine months ago, the white nationalist rally in the city resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman and injuries to several others when a man drove a car through the protesting crowd. Home to the University of Virginia School of Law, the city is now remembered as a place of racism. Its black law students want to make sure that is not what people remember about the city and UVA Law.
Students of the law school’s Black American Law Students Association, which was started in 1970, put together a music video celebrating their triumph and legacy. The law school’s 2018 UVA Black law graduates wanted to make a statement that they have fought and will continue to fight for their motto: “Black Lawyers Matter.’
In an exclusive interview with NewsOne, President of the 2016-2017 Black Law Students Association at the UVA Law Deitra Jones said, ‘With this video we just wanted to shed light on a different side of Charlottesville and provide a more positive narrative of the type of people who live and come to Charlottesville to advance their education. My hope is that it will inspire and motivate people of all ages and ethnicities; that it will encourage them to protect their dreams in the face of naysayers and be resilient about their pursuit in spite of hardship.”
