Summary: Eight women have accused Morgan Freeman of sexual harassment.
Morgan Freeman is famous for his voice and distinguished acting career, but in the entertainment industry, multiple women claim he was known for his uncomfortably sexual behavior on set, while promoting his work, or at his production company Revelations Entertainment.
On Thursday, CNN broke the story that eight women claimed Freeman, 80, had sexually harassed them, and on at least one occasion, his producing partner, Lori McCreary, had witnessed his alleged misbehavior.
One production assistant said that she endured months of sexual harassment on the set of “Going In Style,” a 2015 movie starring Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin. The assistant said that Freeman would make comments about her body and had tried to lift up her skirt to see her underwear, and he did not realize his gross behavior until Arkin told him to stop.
Another production staff member said that Freeman made frequent comments on the set of “Now You See Me” in 2012 and that his creepy gaze was well-known amongst the female crew.
“He did comment on our bodies… We knew that if he was coming by … not to wear any top that would show our breasts, not to wear anything that would show our bottoms, meaning not wearing clothes that [were] fitted,” the production staff member said.
CNN spoke with 16 people as part of their investigation, and eight of them said they were victims of Freeman’s alleged misconduct. The months-long investigation was sparked when journalist Chloe Melas met Freeman at a press junket and he looked her up and down and said, “You are ripe.” After that exchange, the CNN reporter began her probe into Freeman’s history.
Immediately after the report was released, Freeman apologized, according to Variety.
“Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy,” Freeman said. “I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.”
Some women who spoke with CNN said that Freeman was toxic at Revelations Entertainment, the company he founded with McCreary. The company’s credits include “Invictus,” “Along Came a Spider,” and the CBS show “Madam Secretary.” Multiple former staff said that Freeman had harassed them in front of McCreary. One incident included an awkward office party where Freeman allegedly approached the women present and got about one inch in their faces and looked them up and down in a sexual manner.
