Summary: Anthony Bourdain committed suicide at the age of 61.
CNN’s Anthony Bourdain has died at the age of 61. According to Time Magazine, he was found in a hotel room in France, and he had appeared to have hung himself.
Bourdain was in Paris filming his travel food show Parts Unknown.
“His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller,” CNN’s statement said. “His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”
Bourdain was found by Eric Ripert, his friend and the owner of Le Bernadin. Ripert frequently appeared on Parts Unknown as a guest.
Bourdain is survived by one daughter, Ariane, 11. He was divorced from his daughter’s mother and was in a relationship with actress, Asia Argento.
Bourdain, a celebrity chef, hosted Parts Unknown since 2013, and he received five Emmy Awards. He visited roughly 120 countries and explored different cultures and cuisines. He was known for the respectful way he treated those he met on his journey and his passion for food.
Bourdain published a bestseller called Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. The 2000 memoir documented his life as a chef and was later made into a TV show starring Bradley Cooper.
Bourdain said that he was surprised by the book’s success and said that he always made sure to keep jerks out of his life.
“A lot of people offered me things in the wake of that, and I was careful about what I said yes to. I live by something called a no-a–hole rule: Whatever it is I’m considering, I ask myself, whoever I have to deal with in this project, if they call me at 11 o’clock at night, will it be O.K.? I don’t want to have to pick up thinking, Oh, that a–hole’s on the phone,” Bourdain said.
CNN’s Jeff Zucker told the network that Bourdain will be greatly missed.
“Tony will be greatly missed not only for his work but also for the passion with which he did it,” Zucker wrote.
In 2013, Bourdain accepted a Peabody award for his show and shared his work philosophy.
“We ask very simple questions: What makes you happy? What do you eat? What do you like to cook? And everywhere in the world we go and ask these very simple questions,” Bourdain said. “We tend to get some really astonishing answers.”
Bourdain’s suicide comes only days after prominent fashion designer Kate Spade also took her life. According to CNN, “Suicide is a growing problem in the United States. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.”
