Summary: Johnny Depp spoke with Rolling Stone about his money troubles and the pain his legal battles put him through.
Johnny Depp was once a beloved movie star, a darling of Tim Burton films and the quirky lead in Pirates of the Caribbean. But now the actor has seemed to only be making headlines for his legal troubles, which include abuse allegations from his ex-wife and claims that he squanders his fortune.
On Thursday, Rolling Stone published an interview with Depp in London, where the actor talked about his dwindling bank accounts and his various demons.
“It’s estimated that Depp has made $650 million on films that netted $3.6 billion. Almost all of it is gone. He’s suing The Management Group, run by his longtime business manager, Joel Mandel, and his brother Robert for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. The suit cites, among other things, that under TMG’s watch Depp’s sister Christi was given $7 million and his assistant, Nathan Holmes, $750,000, without his knowledge, and that he has paid the IRS more than $5.6 million in late fees,” Rolling Stone said.
In Depp’s battle with TMG, his ex-managers claimed that Depp breached his contract and that the actor wasted his own money, spending almost $2 million a month. In response, Depp glibly countered that he had spent way more than TMG had accused him of spending.
Besides Depp’s financial woes, there are rumors that he is in poor health and had trouble remembering his lines on a recent film set. Plus, Depp has been accused of being emotionally and physically abusive by his ex, Amber Heard. During their divorce proceedings, which finalized in 2017, Heard said that Depp had intense tantrums and had once thrown a cell phone at her.
In his recent interview, the actor revealed that he drank heavily and that his legal throes put him into a depression.
“I was as low as I believe I could have gotten,” Depp said. “The next step was, ‘You’re going to arrive somewhere with your eyes open and you’re going to leave there with your eyes closed.’ I couldn’t take the pain every day.”
Rolling Stone said during their interview with Depp he was “alternately hilarious, sly and incoherent.” The magazine said that Depp seems to be on drugs and drinks a lot of alcohol, and they described him having a “permanent Peter Pan” persona.
Depp’s legal battle with TMG is complicated and pending, but he said that he was not going to back down because he did not want to disappoint his children.
“My son had to hear about how his old man lost all his money from kids at school, that’s not right,” Depp said.
