A lesson for everyone can be learned from the experience a North Carolina man just went through after failing to return a rental video fourteen years ago. Little did Concord man James Meyers know but he had an active arrest warrant out on his name since 2002.
Meyers was driving his daughter to school on Wednesday when he was pulled over for a broken tail light. It was a routine stop that should have been simple but when the officer returned 25 minutes later after running Meyers’ information, he learned that he had a warrant out for not returning “Freddy Got Fingered.”

The VHS movie was rented in 2002 from J&J Video in Salisbury. The rental store has since closed but the misdemeanor charge and fine up to $200 are still in place.

The police officer allowed Meyers to continue his day by dropping his daughter off at school and going to work if he promised to turn himself in later that day. Unfortunately for Meyers, protocol required for him to be handcuffed when he turned himself in at the department and was escorted into the magistrate’s office.

The star of the 2001 movie, comedian Tom Green called Meyers and has offered to put in a good word with the court if needed and to help out financially if the amount is reasonable. Green said, “If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing.”
Meyers has been pulled over before since 2002 but this is the first time he has heard mention of a warrant. Former District Attorney for Union County and attorney John Snyder recommends that everyone check to if they have a warrant out for them, similar to checking to make sure your credit is in line. There are numerous stories out there of others that have been hit with similar problems from not returning a rental.
