Just days ago North Carolina passed a law requiring people to use the bathroom that matches the sex they were born as, a move that that sets the state apart from most others setting laws allowing those that identify as transgender to use the bathroom of their choosing.
The American Civil Liberties Union and a number of advocacy groups have wasted no time in filing a federal lawsuit against the state law, citing that the law discriminates against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

Gov. Pat McCrory signed the law approved by state legislature last week declaring people must use the bathroom that matches the sex on their birth certificate. The law also prohibits individual cities and counties from making their own ordinances that create separate protections of sexual orientation and gender identity in hotels, stores, and restaurants. The law was greatly created in response to a measure passed in Charlotte allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their current gender identity.

As the lawsuit reads, “Lawmakers made no attempt to cloak their actions in a veneer of neutrality, instead openly and virulently attacking transgender people, who were falsely portrayed as predatory and dangerous to others.” The main argument of the lawsuit is that the law violates the civil rights of transgender people because it requires them to use bathrooms that don’t match their gender identity.
Gov. McCrory contends that it is a “breach of basic privacy and etiquette” in that the “basic expectation of privacy in the most personal of settings, a restroom or locker room, for each gender was violated by government overreach and intrusion by the mayor and city council of Charlotte.”

Corporations and business leaders have threatened to pull out of the state if the law was passed. The lawsuit is asking for an injunction until the lawsuit gets its day in court.
