Prince had been prescribed pain killers for some time. Fentanyl is a narcotic used to treat severe pain. It is also a highly addictive drug that can cause respiratory distress and death when taken in high doses and combined with other substances like alcohol.

The speculation over his death has been growing since his death April 21st. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office said the autopsy was inconclusive and wanted to get the toxicology report to come back before making any ruling. Investigators reported that Prince was in possession of painkillers, leading to the stories of his drug problems.

Investigators now believe that the painkillers may have been the reason, if not at least part of the reason, for his emergency hospitalization the week before his death. Prince is reported to have been unconscious when his plane made an emergency landing and was given a shot of Narcan by the first responders. Narcan offsets the effects of opioid overdoses.

Friends have now admitted that Prince was struggling with drugs and were in the process of getting him to see an addiction specialist. Someone had been sent to meet with Prince on the day he was found dead and happened to be the one to call 911.

Prince has had a history of drug issues. His sisters have admitted that he struggled with Percocet and cocaine over ten years ago.
