William Wilcox

Summary: A Michigan man with an outstanding warrant thought playing the Pokemon Go game outside the police station was a safe place to be.

A young Michigan man started off his day biking around town playing his Pokemon Go game, a widely popular augmented-reality mobile game. William Wilcox, 24, was still dressed in pajama pants when he biked up to the police headquarters, which was a “gym” on the popular game. Wilcox had a warrant out for his arrest and in a small town where the police recognized him.

Police saw him standing outside the station next to a flagpole. Officers recognized him from his numerous other run-ins with the law. When police ran a quick warrant check, they realized that they just caught a break. Wilcox had failed to appear in court on a pending breaking and entering charge.

Wilcox was arrested on the misdemeanor charge and released from custody on his own recognizance. His rap sheet includes a conviction in 2014 for receiving stolen property. The charge is a misdemeanor for which he received a year of probation.

In the Pokemon Go game, which was released July 6, a “gym” is a place where players gather to fight or train their character against others using the game. They gain experience points and teams can eventually gain control of a gym location.
