Pena Nieto

Summary: A group of experts found that the President of Mexico copied the work of over 10 authors in his thesis without giving any credit.

Mexico’s president has already been dealing with corruption scandals and an overall decline in public approval ratings. Now Enrique Pena Nieto has a plagiarism accusation regarding his law school thesis to deal with. Investigative journalist Carmen Aristegui reported on her personal website that Pena Nieto copied a third of his thesis.

Aristegui previously reported on other controversial problems regarding the president and his wife. She brought into question several questionable real estate dealings with major government contractors in 2014. Aristegui lost her job for being critical of the president and his wife so she now sticks to enlightening the public through her personal website.

The group of specialists and academics reviewed Pena Nieto’s 200-page thesis submitted in 1991 on the Mexican presidency. The paper was written while he was at Panamerican University from 1984 to 1989. The group stated that used the work of at least 10 other authors without credit, including the former president of Mexico. His spokesman Eduardo Sanchez coughed up the problem to “style errors” where the president forgot to quote passages correctly or cite original authors in the bibliography.

Her previous article covered the building of the Mexico City mansion for the Angelica Rivera, the president’s wife. The firm received hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts for building the mansion.
