weed delivery

Summary: Companies in Washington D.C. are offering to deliver marijuana to your front door if you purchase one of their legal products.

You can get just about anything you want delivered to your door in Washington D.C., including art, juice, clothing, and marijuana. The city is seeing a rise in the number of marijuana delivery services that can have the drug at your door within an hour. The customer orders a regular product with marijuana as the side dish. But is the business model legal?

HighSpeed is just one of many companies that offer this deal. They provide cold pressed juice, but customers can order a side of “love” for a higher cost. Owner David Umeh said, “Before anything else. We are a cold press juice company. We sell cold pressed juice. Anyone that has used HighSpeed and got cannabis it was Christmas. And that’s why we’re legal.”

Initiative 71 “The Legalization of Possession of Minimal Amounts of Marijuana for Personal Use Act of 2014” made it legal for those 21 years of age and older to smoke on private property, possess up to 2 ounces, and grow six plants. The initiative did not make the sale of weed legal though.

The marijuana delivery services are trying to claim that the marijuana is a “gift.” The companies believe their model is legal because they are selling the legal product – like cold pressed juice – the marijuana is just an extra gift.

The D.C. Police Department has a different view. Lt. Andrew Struhar said, “We view any company that advertises that they provide marijuana for any type of payment as illegal. That would include ones that advertise other services in exchange for a marijuana “gift.”

Even the man who proposed the initiative believes the companies are acting illegally. Adam Eidinger said, “We voted on legalization without commercialization. As the author of the law, as someone who has consulted multiple lawyers to interpret what we wrote, there’s nothing in there that says you can get money for marijuana, and if the government can establish that’s what you’re doing, then you’re breaking the law.”
