Summary: Do you suffer from anxiety in your work or personal life? Learn ways you can effectively deal with your anxiety in this article.

Anxiety is a feeling that everyone experiences at some point or another during their lives. We often worry about the future, whether it’s moving to a new home in the next month or wondering what we’re going to do in our careers, causing the feeling of anxiety. Unfortunately, for a large part of the population, anxiety is more than an occasional thing – it becomes an overwhelming and overpowering feeling that can affect how they live their daily lives. 40 million people in the US alone suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder. If you’re one of these people, then life and work can be difficult to navigate, but it’s definitely possible. Here are five ways to help you improve your anxiety now.

  1. Write it out. Journaling can have a huge impact on how you deal with your feelings and anxiety. We’re not talking about the diary entries that pre-teen girls write about what happened that day, but really getting out what you’re feeling and thinking about in that moment. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and start with “I’m feeling…” and let it all go. The good, the bad, everything. Just get it out of your head and onto paper. Confronting what’s happening in your head rather than numbing it away can help you move forward.
  1. Find a friend to talk to about it. Some people do better talking out their feelings rather than writing them. Not only is this a good way to work through your thoughts, but talking to another person makes you feel less alone and can create a great support system. Make sure to choose someone who will just listen and not try to give you advice without you asking for it. Find someone you trust who you can connect with.
  1. Digitally unplug. Our computers and phones have become a huge part of our lives. Whether you’re constantly looking at your calendar, your work email, or social media, all of these sources of communication and information can be incredibly overwhelming. Take the time, whether for a couple hours each day or over the weekend, to completely unplug and get yourself outside or dig into a good book. Get the extra noise out of your head and just spend time with yourself and your loved ones.
  1. Change your diet and exercise routine. How we treat our bodies can have a huge impact on our anxiety. Pay attention to what you’re eating, since some foods can actually cause anxiety attacks. Try to limit sugar and caffeine and go for plenty of fruits and vegetables. Exercise can also make a huge difference in your anxiety. Find something that you love to do and keep at it almost every day. Many people find that running is the perfect way to get their blood pumping, enjoy endorphins, and clear their minds.
  1. Surround yourself with positive people. We all have those friends, family members, or coworkers that can be incredibly negative and complain about everything. Steer clear of those people, especially when your anxiety is at its worst. Find friends who lift you up and have a real passion for life. Not only will they bring you more joy in your own life, but they’ll also serve as an example of how to view your circumstances in a positive light.
