Summary: Casey Kasem’s children and widow are fighting over who is to blame for his death.

In 2014, popular radio host Casey Kasem passed away at the age of 82. He was well known for his syndicated radio show and the catchphrase: “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.” While he was a beloved voice to many, he has unfortunately left behind a legacy of nastiness thanks to his family, who are entangled in a bitter fight over his death, according to People.

In early June, Kasem’s widow, Jean Kasem, 63, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Kasem’s three children Kerri, Mike, and Julie Kasem. She also listed Julie’s husband Jamil Anis Aboulhosn, Catholic Health Initiatives, and attorney Troy Martin as defendants. She was responding to a lawsuit from her three stepchildren, who had sued her in November of 2015.

Kerri, Mike, and Julie Kasem were children from Casey’s first marriage to Linda Myers Kasem. In November 2015, the three sued their stepmom, saying that she had abused their father and caused emotional distress by limiting their access to him once he got sick.

“If you look at the court records, it counters every single thing that she’s putting out there. She’s just putting out false information,” Kerri told PEOPLE. “He was dying because of her actions and would have still lived a year or two. We all did everything we could to save him. For her to say we unplugged him is disgusting and evil.”

Jean is suing the defendants for wrongful death, negligence, and fraud. In her complaint, she said that Casey’s kids forced him to sign a “Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care … under duress and undue influence” in November 2007. She said that they had asked him to sign when he did not have legal representation and was under the influence of medications because he was still recovering from surgery.

Additionally, Jean made the shocking claim that the hospital “chose to execute defendants’ illegal, unilateral decision” by “starving Casey to death” for “financial gain.”

Jean and Casey had one daughter, Liberty, and Jean said that the two were banned from the hospital during his final days. She said that she was finally notified towards his end, and she was told that she would only get five minutes to say her goodbyes.

“The truth about my husband’s homicide is so disturbing to confront but I am compelled to seek justice,” Jean said. “After an exhaustive forensic investigation following Casey’s death and autopsy, there was no other choice but to bring this lawsuit. The facts unambiguously point to defendants’ deceit, self-dealing and fraud, which demand to be exposed. I have taken this action for my daughter Liberty and for my husband of 35 years, as I’m certain Casey would have done the same for me. I pray the justice we seek is quick and thoroughly delivered, not only for us, but for all of the vulnerable and elderly who are subjected to the same predatory and abusive conduct by those who are anxious for them to die for illicit and immediate financial gain.”

Kerri said that Jean’s statement that she was only given a few last minutes with her husband was an “atrocious lie.” Kerri also said that she and her siblings never asked Jean and Casey for money during his illness, and in actuality, it was Jean who was trying to exploit the situation.

“When my father died, what was the first thing she did? She went after our money. The only thing he left us was a trust for the kids—for the grandkids, for us—and that’s all he did. She went after all of it and delayed it for two years,” Kerri said.

Casey’s children had hired a private investigator to monitor Jean before Casey’s death, and the investigator, Logan Clark, said that she had stolen medical equipment. A doctor at Berkley East Convalescent Hospital, where Casey was being cared for, had also reported Jean to the Elder Abuse Investigations Department at the Office of Criminal Investigations. The doctor, Dr. Paul Leitner, said that Jean had removed his nutrition and hydration tube, which he said she knew could result in “great bodily harm or possible demise.”

Casey died in 2014, and years before his death, he had been living with advanced Parkinson’s disease.
