Harvey Weinstein

Summary: Dozens of men in entertainment, media, and politics have been accused of sexual harassment or assault.

In October, The New York Times published an explosive article that documented Weinstein Company founder Harvey Weinstein, and his decades of alleged sexual harassment against women in Hollywood. The piece inspired other Weinstein victims to come forward, and a floodgate soon opened where women and men publicly accused high-profile figures from entertainment, media and politics of groping, rape, and other forms of sexual misconduct at work.

On Monday, PBS and CBS news host Charlie Rose was accused of sexual harassment by eight women. The allegations included groping and lewd phone calls, and Rose issued an apology after The Washington Post broke the story.

“It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior,” Rose said in a statement. “I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.”

Rose and accused men such as comic Louis C.K., actor Ben Affleck, and politician Al Franken have publicly apologized for their actions; but others such as politician Roy Moore, actor Jeremy Piven, and actor Ed Westwick have denied the allegations against them.

The recent bombardment of sexual harassment claims has been dubbed a “witch hunt” by critics who believe that women are unnecessarily attacking men. However, the alleged victims have said that Weinstein’s fall empowered them to come forward with their own stories of harassment and abuse and that them coming forward is only an indication that there was a long-standing rooted problem in society.

So far, dozens of men have been accused of sexual harassment or assault; and their respective companies have either let the individuals go or have begun investigations.
