According to CNN, Trump did not provide proof of his claims of conflicts of interest, but this is a sentiment that he has shared since Mueller began investigating whether or not Russia help him win the 2016 election.

On Twitter, Trump said that he was “fighting back” against “the Russia Witch Hunt,” which began in May of last year.

Mueller is conducting an investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election, and so far, he has indicted several members of Trump’s inner-circle, including his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. This month, Mueller gave Trump a list of questions he planned to ask him as part of the investigation and the questions concern Flynn, Trump’s firing of former FBI director James Comey, his relationship with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, among other topics.

Trump’s statement on Monday aligns with what he said last month on Fox & Friends. On that program, Trump said that the FBI and Department of Justice were corrupt and that he may step in but would not while the “corrupt” Mueller investigation was pending.

“You look at the corruption at the top of the FBI — it’s a disgrace,” Trump said. “And our Justice Department, which I try and stay away from, but at some point I won’t.”

In Trump’s defense against Mueller’s investigation, he has assembled a legal team consisting of Jay Sekulow, Rudy Giuliani, Jane Raskin, and Martin Raskin. His team was previously led by experienced criminal attorney John Dowd, who resigned in April. Inside sources said that Trump and Dowd had been arguing behind the scenes about the direction of the case, and Dowd was upset when Trump hired two attorneys without Dowd’s approval. Those attorneys ended up backing out of the job because of conflicts of interest.

Giuliani has only been Trump’s personal attorney for weeks but already he has been causing a stir, making multiple appearances on television and stating things that appear to contradict the President’s prior words. For instance, Giuliani claimed that Trump had paid back Michael Cohen after Cohen gave porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 in 2016 to silence her about her affair with Trump. Trump previously had denied ever knowing about that transaction until the story broke in January by the Wall Street Journal.
