Nick Cannon has a radio show on 92.3 NOW and he shared what happened to him during the holidays on the station recently. Cannon spent time at an Aspen, Colorado hospital during the early stages of January for what was called ‘mild kidney failure,’ by his wife Mariah Carey.

“I’m one of those people who have always been this way … I thought I was healthy,” Cannon said on his radio show this week.

The family spent their Christmas in Aspen, where Mariah and the twins suffered from colds, which prompted Cannon to stock up on the cold medicine and endue a grueling fitness schedule to stay healthy.

“I was trying to be Superman and I hadn’t slept for maybe four days because I was taking care of the kids,” he said.

“Two days before New Year’s, I started to feel this horrible pain in my back,” he said. He said that he thought he might have hurt his back while working out.

Mariah called a doctor when she found her husband lying on the floor in pain. He then went to the hospital to be checked by doctors. The first thought from doctors was that Cannon had kidney stones and then it moved to a possible kidney infection.

“They did some more tests … and — it took a day or two — and they were like, ‘We think it’s a little more serious than a kidney infection. We’re going to keep you in the hospital. You need to stay here.'”

Cannon suffered through multiple tests to find out what was wrong. Several days after being admitted to the hospital, doctors issued Cannon some scary news.

“They came and told me that my kidneys aren’t functioning. Not just one — not the one that was in pain — both both of them weren’t functioning right,” he said. “My immune system started to attack my kidneys … And my kidneys pretty much failed.”

Cannon was sent home after his condition improved following a move to a Los Angeles hospital. Not too long after returning home, Cannon was readmitted because his kidney pain returned.

Right now, Cannon has returned to work on his daily radio show while on the mend and is appreciating life as much as possible.

“I’ve got to go back [to the doctor] a couple more times,” he added. “But I’m fine. I’m totally recovered.”
