It has been announced that Mark D. Hopson, the Management and Executive Committees member for Sidley Austin LLP , is taking over the role of Managing Partner for the law firm’s 275 attorney Washington, D.C. office, according to a press release from the firm. Hopson takes over for Carter G. Phillips, who is assuming the role of Co-Chair of the law firm’s Executive Committee beginning on May 1, 2012.

“After 17 years of managing the Washington, D.C. office, I am so gratified that a lawyer and colleague of Mark’s stature has agreed to become the office’s Managing Partner,” Phillips said. “In his two decades in our D.C. office, Mark has developed into an exceptionally gifted lawyer and manager. He has played an indispensible role in the success of the D.C. office and everyone in the firm has complete confidence in his leadership going forward.”

“It is an honor to be asked to take over management responsibilities from Carter Phillips, who built not only a world class practice, but a world class office here in Washington,” Hopson said. “I hope to provide continuity and support for an office that has an abundance of talented lawyers both as leaders in their practices and in the profession as a whole. As the firm expands on our successful national and global platform, the opportunities for the D.C. office will continue to grow.”

Hopson is currently the co-head of the law firm’s White Collar practice. Hopson’s practice has worked on various criminal and civil litigation issues, including defending clients in jury trials. Hopson has also represented clients in cases involving the government and internal investigations. Hopson will continue to operate an active litigation practice while serving in his new role.

Hopson is a Fellow for the American College of Trial Lawyers and has also spent time as a trial practice teacher and adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center. Hopson graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1984 and then served as a law clerk for Judge Thomas F. Hogan in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia.
