On Tuesday’s ‘The View,’ President Barack Obama corrected host Elisabeth Hasselbeck regarding his stance on same-sex marriage. Obama announced his stance on same-sex marriage last Wednesday, saying that he feels same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. Not long after Obama made his announcement, Hasselbeck, criticized the president. She said that he ‘long held both positions’ regarding the issue. Tuesday was the first interview Obama conducted since his announcement and he told the viewers of the show how he came to his conclusion.

Hasselbeck asked the president how he will approach the issue now that he supports gay marriage. She brought up the point that Obama and Romney “actually agreed personally on the definition of marriage” up until the past week. She also wanted to know how Obama would “move things forward any more than Mitt Romney in terms of leaving it to the states. Because at this point, you both said leave it to the states to decide.”

“Elisabeth, that’s actually not true,” Obama responded. “OK,” Hasselbeck said.

Obama went on to say that Romney was asking for a ‘constitutional amendment’ which would ‘federalize’ a ban on same-sex marriage. Hasselbeck then asked Obama about the economy, in which he said previously he would be held ‘accountable’ for it.

“How do you grade yourself honestly in terms how you’ve done in terms of economics? she asked him. Obama said that he and his administration ‘still has work to do.’
