The band Green Day has announced that Billy Joe Armstrong has gone into rehab and is “seeking treatment for substance abuse.” The announcement comes in the wake of a guitar-smashing and expletive-laden incident that occurred at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas on Friday.
Apparently, a digital sign indicating that the band had only one minute to play brought on the incident. The singer, who felt offended, said, “I’m not f***ing Justin Bieber, you motherf**kers … Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-f**king-88. And you’re gonna give me one f**king minute? … You gotta be f**kin’ joking. I got one minute, one minute left. Now I got nothing left. Let me show you what one minute f**king means.”
And then the singer and the band smashed their guitars and stomped off stage with the promise, “We’ll be back.”
Since then Green Day has publicly stated, “We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended … We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
Though earlier it was reported that the band’s time was cut short when Usher’s performance crossed its allotted time and went on, the band has denied such reports.
Green Day is scheduled to release three albums over the next four months, but its promotional tours are now on the verge of collapse with Billy Joe Armstrong going into rehab. Earlier this month, the band had canceled a concert in Italy over Armstrong’s “severe dehydration.” The band is not expected to go on a proper tour before late November.
