It sounds like the scenario of countless fairy tales: the king of the land wants to marry off his fickle princess daughter and sets up some peculiar challenges for whatever man aspires to the honor. Only instead of a king, it’s a wealthy playboy business tycoon, and instead of some magic quest, the challenge is converting a lesbian to heterosexuality
“I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind hearted,” said the 76-year-old Cecil Chao. But it seems that the truly important thing is that the suitor be male-equipped.
“Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous, and does volunteer work,” he said, sweetening the deal.
He denies that his daughter Gigi married her 7-year partner in France this year.
The Hong Kong property developer claims to himself have slept with 10,000 women. He is well known for making public appearances with one of his most recent young girlfriends. Whether this tainted his daughter’s view of masculinity is uncertain, but Hong Kong remains conservative and does not recognize same-sex marriages.
Despite the comedic quality of such a scheme to heteroize his daughter, it doesn’t take much imagination to see things go awkward, if not tragic, if some foolish young man actually attempts this.
