According to reports from TheWrap, producer John Singleton has settled with Paramount Pictures and MTV Films regarding a lawsuit filed over a 2005 film called “Hustle & Flow.” No details about the settlement were made available aside from the fact that it was ‘amicable.’
The lawsuit was filed by Singleton against MTV Films and Paramount in October of 2011. The suit claimed that Singleton came to an agreement with Paramount at the Sundance Film Festival. The agreement said that Paramount could distribute the movie for $9 million so long as it exchanges financing and distribution for two more films.
According to the lawsuit, Paramount started ‘asserting self-imposed, non-existent conditions’ on Crunk Pictures, which is a production company owned by Singleton. This occurred when Crunk tried to move forward with two more films. Singleton was asking for $20 million in damages in the lawsuit. The suit also claimed that Singleton skipped out on other projects to make “Hustle & Flow” because of the promise made by Paramount.
Paramount said that it was going to follow through on its deal with Singleton but he decided to make the 2011 movie “Abduction” instead. The attorney for Singleton called that claim ‘desperate.’
Last month, Singleton’s lawsuit hit a roadblock when Judge Amy D. Hogue from the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled in agreement with Paramount and MTV Films that the unjust enrichment and rescission claims filed by Singleton should not continue.
