On Monday, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP announced that the former Acting Deputy Director of the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, Robert (“Bob”) M. Loeb, has joined the law firm as a partner in its Supreme Court & Appellate Litigation practice in Washington D.C.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshua Rosenkranz, the head of the Supreme Court & Appellate practice of the firm, said, “Few lawyers in private practice can match Bob’s experience leading major appellate matters in the most complex and high-stakes appeals … When the Government simply had to win an appeal, it repeatedly turned to Bob to devise and implement the winning strategy—on issues from national security to commercial law. We are thrilled to offer our clients the benefit of this extraordinary talent.”

Robert Loeb had been in the DOJ for close to 25 years. His experience includes arguing more than 100 appeals and briefing hundreds of cases in the courts of appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has represented government agencies and high-ranking government officials, besides representing the federal government. Loeb had the experience of appearing in every federal circuit court and in multiple en banc cases. He served the DOJ and represented officials like two former Secretaries of Defense in their individual capacities, during both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Loeb said upon his joining the law firm, “Orrick possesses a thriving and premier quality appellate practice, which is sought out by clients and partners from within the firm and beyond … The extraordinary talent and experience of Orrick’s attorneys and the firm’s top-to-bottom commitment to a collaborative, client-first approach to the law, presents an extraordinary litigation platform for me to build upon my many successes in high-stakes appeals.”

During his tenure at the DOJ, Robert Loeb received several awards including the 2010 Presidential Rank Award and the Attorney General Distinguished Service Award. In 2007, he received the highest honor of the Civil Division, the Stanley D. Rose Memorial Award.

Before joining the DOJ, Robert Loeb had clerked under Judge Richard Posner, then judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
