Following the revelation that Simon Cowell is expecting a baby with his friend’s wife, an arrangement that also is costing that friend his marriage, Simon Cowell was prodded for explanation during an X Factor Press Tour – in which not much was divulged beyond indirect confirmation of the situation, despite his lawyer previously denying the whole thing.
“Congratulations on the addition,” said a reporter to Simon, as reported by E!. “The new baby. Were you as surprised by the news as we were?”
“I haven’t read the newspapers. Am I missing something?” Cowell joked. “Sorry. Unfortunately, I have to keep this private for the moment. It’s just one of those things, but thank you anyway.”
Another reported circled back around to the deferred question by asking the female judges, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio, and Demi Lovato how they felt Simon would be as a father.
“No comment,” said Demi.
Simon laughed and said, “that was clever,” and a show producer said, “He’ll be a hell of a producer.”
Despite all the mummness on the issue, Simon said he will discuss the pregnancy eventually. “There are a lot of things I will eventually clear up when the time is right. I really have to be sensitive here because there are a lot of people’s feelings involved.”
Especially relevant are the feelings of friend Andrew Silverman and his wife Lauren’s 7-year-old son.
“My top priority is protecting my 7-year-old son while working to resolve all outstanding issues with my wife,” Andrew Silverman said in a statement Thursday, as People magazine reported. “Hopeful people can respect the interest of our child during this process.”
Lauren agreed with this sentiment in her own statement, saying, “I am committed to sorting things out with Andrew as amicably as possible to ensure the well-being of our son. I would hope for some space and privacy in order to work through this.”
