Perkins Coie has announced a new partner hire. John D. Penn has joined the Dallas office in the firm’s Bankruptcy & Restructuring Practice. John will also be able to work in the New York office on chapter 11 filings as needed. Penn’s most recent experience was from Haynes and Boone LLP in Forth Worth.
Office Managing Partner of Perkins Coie’s Dallas office, Steve Smith, commented that the Texas office has almost doubled in size. He continues to say that this firm has seen a great year in terms of growth. Finally Smith adds, “John is a meaningful addition to our presence in the Lone Star State and we’re delighted to welcome him to the firm.”
John Penn had formerly been a president and chairman of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). He has been recognized nationally for his bankruptcy and litigation skills. Part of his experience includes being the lead attorney representing parties in Chapter 11 cases, including debtors, major credit institutions and creditors committees as well as defendants in bankruptcy litigation. He also is a “frequent speaker and commentator on commercial bankruptcy.”
David M. Neff, co-chair of the firm’s Financial Transaction & Restructuring Practice says that John’s addition strengthens the firm’s national bankruptcy and restructuring team. Neff goes on to say that Penn is an effective counsel and an asset not only to the firm’s Dallas office but national to the firm’s entire litigation practices.
John Penn received his undergraduate and J.D. from Baylor University. He is an Emeritus Director of the American College of Bankruptcy and the International Insolvency Institute. He has been lauded in Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America (2003-2013) and Super Layers (2003-2013). His practice areas include “airline reorganization, bankruptcy and insolvency litigation, indenture trustees, successor trustees and secured creditors.” He has worked with clients across different areas including the “airline, utilities, energy, timber, real estate, and finance industries.”
