According to Gawker.com, “He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying. “She started shouting at him accusing him of spoiling Christmas; it was a really heated argument.”
A man who was fed up with his girlfriend’s incessant Christmas shopping responded to her request for one more look around a mall shoe store by leaping seven floors to his death. 38-year-old, Tao Hsiao, had been shopping with his girlfriend at Golden Eagle Shopping Complex in the city of Xuzhou, in Xuzhou, China, when she asked to check out one last shoe store.
Quoting witnesses of the tragedy, Guangming Online reports that the man had been arguing with his girlfriend before he climbed over a seventh-floor railing and leapt to his death. According to the Daily Mail, “She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas. It was a really heated argument.”
Graphic surveillance footage from after the incident shows that the man landed in the mall’s atrium, near a number of cosmetics counters. Tao Hsiao was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesman for the shopping center said that no one below was injured in the December 7 incident, and that the man died instantly upon impact.
“This is a tragic incident, but this time of year can be very stressful for many people,” the spokesman said. No word yet on the girlfriend’s reaction, or whether she still ended up going to that shoe store.
