Michael Drewniak, the press secretary to Governor Chris Christie, is one of Christie’s closest advisers, according to Bloomberg News. According to his lawyer, Drewniak was interviewed by U.S. prosecutors concerning the deliberate traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge. Federal prosecutors are seeking to determine whether the lane closings that took place in September at the George Washington Bridge amounted to a crime.

The Fort Lee lane closure scandal is also known as the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal or Bridgegate, and is a U.S. political scandal in which a staff member and certain political appointees of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie have been shown to have conspired to create traffic jams in Fort Lee, New Jersey, starting at a New York-bound, upper-level, toll plaza entrance to the George Washington Bridge.

Fort Lee officials declared the unannounced closures a threat to public safety, noting multiple cases in which emergency services responses had been delayed, and said that schools had been disrupted by the delayed arrivals of students and teachers who had been caught in the traffic jams.

Michael Drewniak was interviewed on Thursday and it took place at the Newark office of United States attorney for New Jersey, Paul J. Fishman, according to the New York Times.

The failure of state officials, or lawyers, to report or stop cases of wrongdoing that reach the level of felony crimes — which Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye believed to be the case with the secret closure of traffic lanes leading into the George Washington Bridge as an act of political retaliation — could be prosecuted not only as official misconduct, but also under the seldom-used “misprision of felony” statute. Bloomberg News reported that, Anthony Iacullo, Michael Drewniak’s attorney, said in a statement that “He will continue to cooperate fully with federal authorities as needed.” For information about employment opportunities with the Port Authority of New York, readers can click here.
