Does anyone here read The Bloggess by Jenny Lawson?
If you don’t, you really should. She’s pretty hilarious, and in a slightly disturbing and incredibly honesty way. She’s someone who speaks her mind, tells her truth, and does it in a way that often makes you laugh out loud.
For this month’s book club I was thrilled when everyone decided on her Memoir: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (partially because my friend had already sent me her copy of the book).
Sadly I have no actual pictures from book club (WAY too excited for Lindsay’s big news to focus on things like photos), but if you pick up this book, it will make up for my shortcomings.
The Memoir is, well, just that: a memoir. However, I’m pretty sure you’ve never read a memoir like this. Jenny Lawson grew up in the middle of nowhere Texas, with an eccentric father who worked as a taxidermist on their property. Despite her many efforts to fit in at school, her family made that next to impossible.
Throughout the novel, Jenny recaps some of the most cringe-inducing moments of her life, from childhood up until present day. Hence the title: “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened.” Thankfully, Jenny doesn’t shut these stories away in the depths of her mind but shares them with her readers. Not only is her content entertaining and often shocking, but her writing style sounds as though she’s talking to a friend, rather than writing a novel. My favorite parts of the book are where she recaps conversations between her and her husband or friends, writing the dialogue line by line.
I cannot recommend this book enough (although NOT for the squeamish) if you’re looking for a good laugh.
