Before we get to this all important news, guess what I get to do today!?!

Justice Scalia, who is a Supreme Court justice, is coming to my school to speak. If you remember, Justice Breyer came about a month ago and I had to watch from another room on TV. Well this time I got a spot in the auditorium!

Now, I’m not allowed to take photos (I know you’re all CRYING on the inside) but I’ll let you know how it is! I’m pretty excited since I read his court opinions all the time, and now I get to see him and hear him speak in person!

Who is someone you would love to meet or hear speak in person?

If you’ve been reading for a while, you might notice that I often get a lot of my news from Huffington Post. I love it because it has real news mixed in with more interesting things too! I confessed my love for Huffington Post a couple weeks ago with some interesting articles I found.

Today, I searched through the Food and Healthy Living News sections to find some good stories to get your thoughts on!

Sweet Personality

Ever think that you’ll eat so many sweets you’ll become a sweeter person? Well, me neither. But one article discussed a study published in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that showed people who like sweets are “more likely to be agreeable, friendly and compassionate” than others who prefer bitter or spicy tasting foods. They also found that a person who has just eaten a sweet was more likely to help a person in need afterwards!

I’m a pretty big sweets fan, so clearly this means my personality must be sweet too!

Wouldn’t it be interesting if you could determine a person’s personality by what they liked to eat? If this is true, what would your personality be based on the foods you crave?

Now this one was just crazy.

If you were in a fight with your significant other and felt the need to throw something at him/her, what would you throw?

Well a woman here in Chicago threw cupcakes at her husband and is now being charged with misdemeanor domestic battery! Ok, so she hit him over the head as well…

Cupcakes

I just think it’s hilarious! First of all, why cupcakes?? I mean, really, what a waste of good cupcakes! I guess I could understand if they were bad cupcakes… Perhaps that’s how the fight started: bad cupcakes.

Secondly, the woman who threw the cupcakes was 60 years old! A GROWN WOMAN. Too much to handle.

The best part of all? The husband claimed to be “scared for his safety.” Excuse me sir, but they are cupcakes. CUPCAKES. I don’t know if you could find something LESS scary to be flung at you! Unless you had a severe aversion to sugar…

I mean look at me: menacing with these bits of cake!

Would you be scared for your safety if someone threw cupcakes at you? If you had to pick a food to get in a food fight with, what would it be? (I’ve always thought spaghetti would be entertaining…)

And finally, the law student in me found this one very interesting: the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is planning to sue General Mills for their marketing claims revolving around their products Fruit by the Foot, Fruit Roll-Ups and  Fruit Gushers.

(source)

The CSPI is claiming that the phrases they use on their packaging, such as “low fat” and “a good source of Vitamin C” imply that the products are healthy, but in reality, these products are full of high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives and trans fats.

Now, personally, I used to be a HUGE fan of Fruit Roll Ups and Fruit by the Foot growing up. However, I can completely understand CSPI’s claim. Although I read food labels, try not to buy things with ingredients I don’t understand, and know that these products are not actually healthy, most Americans do not understand any of this.

I don’t mean to be putting down the intelligence of our citizens, but when the packaging says “low fat” and “a good source of Vitamin C”, they assume it’s healthy and don’t take the time to look further into the product. Hopefully I’ll hear more about where this lawsuit goes!

What do you think about these claims that certain packaged foods are healthy, when you know they are really not?

This immediately makes me think of how upset I got about a Pop-Tart commercial! They were said “made with real fruit; a healthy breakfast for growing kids.” Um yea, growing outward. I used to eat in insane amount of Pop Tarts in middle school… and I can guarantee they are not a healthy breakfast…
