Summary: Florida’s bar exam pass rates have dropped significantly with the 2014 examinations.

Florida’s July 2014 bar exam results are out, and it’s not a pretty sight. According to LawCrossing, the total pass rate for the July 2014 exam for first-time takers was 71.8 percent. Out of 2,864 individuals that sat for the exam, 2,057 passed. Last year, the pass rate was 77.2 percent.

The University of Florida topped the test-takers with a pass rate of 90.6 percent. Although scores declined overall, the University of Florida’s scores actually increased by 2.4 percent from the 2013. Florida State ranked second at 81.8 percent, and the University of Miami came in third place at 81.2 percent.

Last year, Stetson University College of Law had the highest percentage of students pass at 89.3 percent, well above the average for all test-takers. The University of Florida ranked second at 88.2 percent, and Florida State ranked third at 86.7 percent. For both 2013 and 2014, Ave Maria School of Law was at the bottom, with 57.7 percent and 56.6 percent passing, respectively.

According to the Florida Board of Law Examiners website, from 2009 to 2012, the University of Miami boasted the highest bar exam pass rates each year for the July exam. In 2009, the pass rate for the July exam was 80 percent. The University of Miami had 83.9 of its graduates pass the exam. In 2010, the pass rate dipped a bit to 79.2 percent. Again, the University of Miami ranked first that year, with a pass rate of 86 percent. In 2011, the pass rate for the Florida bar exam was 80.1 percent. The University of Miami’s pass rate was 82.6 percent. In 2012, the overall pass rate was 80.2 percent, and the University of Miami’s pass rate was 81.6 percent.
