Foley & Lardner is pleased to announce that Eley Thompson has joined the firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Litigation Practices. Thompson will work out of the firm’s Chicago office.

Thompson’s practice will encompass multiple areas of intellectual property law, including protecting trade secrets, patent and trademark prosecution, and litigation. Thompson has counseled multi-national corporations and Fortune 500 companies. His electrical engineering background allows him to troubleshoot complicated issues with his clients. Thompson has experience in polymer chemistry, video game systems, gene sequencing, manufacturing, and high-tech mobile, software and internet systems.

The firm hired a new Director of Public Affairs in April.

Pavan Agarwal, the chair of Foley & Lardner’s Intellectual Property Practice, said, “Eley’s wealth of experience as a patent strategist covering prosecution and litigation, trade secret and trademark matters will add significant depth to our established bench of IP attorneys. His capabilities will add value to our clients across the country and internationally.”

Thompson has practiced in intellectual property law for over 23 years. He has litigated fundamental patents that established the video game industry and represented an inventor who was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Thompson also frequently advises clients with intellectual property portfolios in excess of 1,000 active applications.

A Foley & Lardner attorney avoided being disciplined by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Stephen Aschettino joined the firm’s New York office in December.

Thompson is currently the vice chair of the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s Litigation Committee. Thompson has been invited to discuss intellectual property issues at the White House and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
