Summary: Although it sounds impossible, many attorneys are happy individuals who find great satisfaction in their work. Here’s how they do it.

With all of the headaches that accompany the practice of law, it may seem impossible to some to actually be happy. However, with a few adjustments, it is entirely possible to practice law and be happy doing it. In a recent article, Finding Bliss at the Bar: How to Be a Happy Lawyer, BCG Attorney Search offers tips and tricks to maintain a positive attitude while in the office and the courtroom.

What
Where

First, you have to make sure that you like what you do and the people you work with. Working with negative individuals will only add to your stress. Similarly, when you feel unfulfilled in your work, it is hard to be happy when you must perform these tasks every day.

Do not worry that lawyers suffer a high rate of depression and alcoholism. Not all attorneys are doomed to such a fate. Remember that you are helping individuals solve very difficult problems, and that you are paid to think, problem solve, and persuade.

To be happy, one does not necessarily skip down the halls at the office. One may simply be content and satisfied with daily life. These attorneys are kind to their staff, enjoy working with others, and have interests and hobbies outside of the office. Common traits that satisfied attorneys share are creativity, compassion, trustworthiness, dependability, and an ability to laugh.

A bad work environment does not necessarily mean that you hate the practice of law. It may simply mean that you hate where you are practicing. You may need to consider changing firms if you are truly miserable.

Most individuals who are happy enjoy the “simple harmony” of life. Again, when you enjoy what you do, your work life and your personality flow well together. When you hate what you do, it is hard to find this harmony.

If you hate your work, see if there are additional opportunities within your firm. For example, many firms have increased their pro bono services, which may give you an outlet to try something new.

Make sure you take the time to get to know your colleagues. Having friendly relationships at work will help your days go by more smoothly, and will also help you network.

Make a change if you need to. Make sure, however, that you explore all of your options before you jump into the next phase of your career. Never make a move until you have another position nailed down elsewhere.

Exercise! Sweating your stress out a few times a week is one of the best ways to get rid of negative emotions and boost the production of “feel good” hormones.

Get involved with your community and give back. Donating your time or money to a cause you find worthy is rewarding and gives you the chance to create new relationships.

Practice gratitude. Take note of all the little things in your life that you are grateful for, whether it was a complimentary cup of coffee at your local coffee shop, a parking spot close to the mall, or the fact that you got a good report at the doctor. Practicing gratitude in this manner will change your perspective and make you more positive in all aspects of your life.
